Bilingual Speech and Language Assessments
Bilingual speech and language assessments are designed to identify language and communication disorders in students who are bilingual or speak languages other than English. These assessments are conducted in both the student's primary language and English to determine the student's language proficiency and identify any potential areas of concern.
The IDEA guidelines require that schools use a variety of assessment tools and strategies to evaluate a student's language abilities. This may include standardized and non-standardized tests, observations of the student's communication skills, and interviews with the student, teacher, and/or their family members. The assessments should also take into account the student's cultural background and any cultural differences that may impact their communication skills.
At Speech and Love, we assess students in schools to appropriately identify language disorders, ensure assessments are appropriate, and yield valid results for students from bilingual backgrounds.
If students are found eligible for IEP services, Speech and Love Bilingual Therapy can partner with schools to provide services.
